JPC 2000 Hosted by Eta Chapter
This summer, Eta chapter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was host to the 5th Joint Province Convention. Convention meetings took place from Thursday, June 29th through Saturday July st, capped with the Awards Banquet on Saturday night.
Over 65 people congregated on the Marquette Campus including delegates
from each of our chapters. Theta chapter continued their tradition of driving
in a van.
The weekend began as delegates and national officers arrived on Wednesday
night. Some early delegates were able to taste the buffalo wings at the
famous Brown Bottle Pub, located in the old Schlitz Brewery complex. Afterwards,
the delegates, national officers and guests went to Murphy's Irish Pub
on Marquette's campus to enjoy beverage and karaoke singing. The crowd
was blessed to witness to some energizing renditions of Copacabana and
Volcano and not to mention A Boy Named Sue.
On Thursday, the Supreme Council held their meeting while delegates arrived. The Convention meetings were held in the Ballroom of the Alumni Memorial Union. The first presentation was made by Phi Chapter on Risk Reduction and involved several skits on alcohol intervention techniques. The second presentation was made by Communications Director Burt Wagner and Eastern Province Councilor, Mike Votaw on Fundraising. After the days business, a barbecue was held at the Eta Chapter House. Afterwards, the delegates were able to explore the Milwaukee nightlife. Some chose to go down to the lakefront to watch the Opening day fireworks at Summerfest while others chose to see the bar scene on Water Street.
Fridays events started with a tour of the Harley Davidson Plant and Miller Brewery. The meetings contiued with a presentation on Rush planning and strategies by Central Province Councilor Chris Perez, followed by a presentation on the National Budget by Grand President Paul Lindner and Treasurer Ed Hurst. This was followed by a discussion on the proposed new national officer position of National Director.
On Saturday morning, a tour of several buildings on Marquette's campus was attended by several delegates. Some buildings highlighted on the tour included the Alumni Memorial Union, Haggerty Engineering and the Haggerty Art Museum buildings (both named after Eta Alum Patrick Haggerty) the Joan of Arc Chapel and Cudahy Math and Computer Science building. The Saturday meetings consisted of a special meeting of the General Convention and the individual Province Conventions. Some special news to note is that the Supreme Council voted to move the Delta Active and Alumni Chapters into the Central Province.
The Awards Banquet was held in the ballroom of the Alumni Memorial Union. After cocktails and dinner, several announcements were made. Special recognition was made to the newest chapters of Sigma Phi Delta: Chi at University of Cincinnati, Psi at University of Delaware and Omega at Rutgers University. Kappa Chapter was the recipient of the Efficiency contest for its assistance in the installation of Omega Chapter. New National officers were announced. Ben Prins completed his term as Western Province Councilor and Theta alumni Kevin Oldknow was elected to replace him. Alpha Alumni John Tighi was appointed as Western Province Secretary. Eta Alumni Chris Perez continued a second term as Central Province Councilor and Eta Active Steve Mascheri was appointed as Central Province Secretary. In the Eastern Province, Kappa Alumni, Mike Votaw continued as the Eastern Province Councilor. Eta Alumni, Mike Stelzner was announced as the Merchandising Director.

The convention was a huge success and we look forward to the General Convention to be held in the summer of 2001at Kappa Chapter in Indiana.
